Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

I got a dog last weekend.  She is a terrier mix, and while a bit excitable, a sweetheart.

Sweet Charity

"Sweet Charity" is afraid of the kitchen.

I’d been kicking around getting a dog for a few months, and scrolling through pages of dogs who need to be adopted basically tipped me over the edge.  After doing some research and making multiple visits to the local PetCo, the contact for the dog adoption society I chose, I finally selected “Sweet Charity” and have taken her home for a 1-week test drive before finally adopting her.  Things are going well.

Sweet Charity seems like more of a name for a racehorse than a little dog.  I’m still on the fence about whether I’m keeping it or changing it (the name, not the dog).

Anyway, she’s 3-4 years old and is still adjusting to living in my apartment.  I thought making her some homemade treats might break the ice a bit.

The Doggy Dessert Chef is a blog I’ve been following from FoodBuzz.  She creates all sorts of recipes for dog treats, including recipes for dogs with allergies.

My parents’ dog has a gluten allergy, so I thought I’d make a batch of gluten free doggy treats to share with their dog and my new one.  A quick search of the blog brought me to a simple recipe: Easy Peasy Wheat Free Peanut Butter Dog Treats.

Peanut Butter Treat Ingredients

Holy crepe, my counter is clean!

It only takes 3 ingredients, all of which I already had in my kitchen except the rice flour – and that was readily available in my local grocery store.  Shot glass sold separately…it was the only glass I had that would produce reasonably-sized treat rounds.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

om nom nom.

Using my fancy pants new Silpat, I was able churn out 60 treats.  And new doggie seemed to like it too.

Remember kids, if you want to get a dog, consider adoption!  I got mine from Small Dog Rescue in Atlanta.

  1. Like! She’s super cute and very obviously digging those treats. And yay you for adopting! *applause*

  2. @Anna V – I like her more every day. She’s a cool dog and worth spending 30 minutes making treats for. ^_^

@Doggy Dessert Chef – She is! And I love your blog by the way…looking forward to making more dog snacks in the future. 🙂

  3. I agree with you 100% about the name sounding like a racehorse. I vote for a new name! Can’t wait to meet her. Maybe she can hang out with Molly – she’s been pretty depressed lately.

  4. Teh puppeh is so cute!! Her ears are amazing. I don’t have a dog, but know how much they love peanut butter. I made treats for my kitty once, but they were a mix that the humane society gave me when I adopted her.

  5. @Emily – working on a new name now….”Ripley” is the best so far, with “Gouda” slowly falling behind. We definitely need to get the dogs together. 😀

@Jessica – zomg teh puppeh! XD The treats were definitely pie to make, but now that my BF has spoiled her with store-bought treats and I’m not sure if she’ll like mine as much. >.<

  6. It would seem your dog treats are so good it makes her eyes glow.

    I approve.
