Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is an Ohio-based handmade ice cream shop chain started in 2002. They seem to have only 16 brick-and-mortar locations at the moment, which isn’t surprising since the brand is so young. They do ship nationwide, though. Currently there is only one store in Georgia, over on the Westside of Atlanta.
After our lunch at Yeah! Burger, we wandered over the railroad tracks to sample some ice creams at Jeni’s.
The interior is very nice, and there are a lot flavors, options and toppings on the large chalkboard. The smallest size of every ice cream is only $4.50 for two scoops.
Probably the neatest thing about Jeni’s (especially after having an organic grass-fed beef burger) is that their dairy cows are grass-fed, too! And they use a bunch of natural ingredients. Check this quote from the website:
“Every single thing we put in our ice cream is legit. Generic chemist-built ice cream bases and powdered astronaut-friendly gelato mixes? No, ma’am. We build every recipe from the ground up with luscious, Snowville milk and cream from cows that eat grass. With that exquisite base, we explore pure flavor in whatever direction moves us at any moment, every day, all year.”
There were a lot of really delightful and funky flavors to choose from, so before I ordered I had a couple of samples. I tried the Middle West Whiskey Egg Nog and the Goat Cheese and with Red Cherries. They were both very good. The goat cheese was especially rich and yummy, though I am a huge sucker for egg nog and prefer that one. Because I wanted to try as many flavors as possible I didn’t order either of those but opted for two brand new flavors.
I had heard that The Buckeye State was a particularly good flavor, so I ordered one scoop of that and one scoop of salty caramel. I do enjoy peanut butter and chocolate, and the flavor of the ice cream was quite good, but the texture was very dense and hard. The salty caramel, on the other hand had a delightful creamy texture and was nice and soft. The softness only increased as the ice cream began to melt, whereas The Buckeye State didn’t get soft before my patience ran out.
Claire got the brown butter almond brittle, and while she thought it tasted good, she was a little bummed that the brittle chunks were so large, taking up so much space in the ice cream scoop. She also got the cloverton and red currant and thought it was creamy and delicious with a mild cheesecake flavor. She gives Jeni’s 4.5 stars!
I didn’t think that Jeni’s was too expensive, but it is a little above average for the market as a whole. It seems worth it though, if you’re looking for a handmade quality treat! Claire and I average out to 4 stars for Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams!
