Wedding Cake Ice Cream

No matter how well you wrap it up, cake only lasts for so long. This is a fun little idea we came up with over our honeymoon, using our Artisan stand mixer (wedding gift!), Artisan ice cream maker (wedding gift!) and leftover wedding cake.

Delicious chocolate-cake-with-coffee-icing-flavored ice cream.

We used the French Vanilla ice cream recipe from our User’s Manual.

We heated half-and-half in a bowl and poured it slowly into the mixer which already contained the mixed egg yolks and sugar. Then it went back on the stove to be heated some more. Then back into the mixer with whipping cream, vanilla and salt. Then the whole thing went into the fridge to chill for a few hours.

Then we put the freeze bowl on, hooked up the special beater and poured the ice cream mixture into the bowl. By this time it smelled very much like ice cream. The mixer then ran for about 25 minutes and the ice cream slowly fluffed up and became frozen. Then we added the cake and ran it a bit more.

If you compare this picture to the ones above, to can see the ice cream now barely fits in the container – it’s so fluffy!

Then the finished project went into an airtight container and into the freezer for 4 to 6 hours.

All in all, we are very happy with the process and the results. The mixer is easy to use (and gorgeous). The ice cream maker is easy to use and the recipe delicious but not overly complicated (though we are on the market for a lower sugar recipe). I especially love that this ice cream maker utilizes a machine we already own – it doesn’t take up much more space than the stand mixer already does, which is very much appreciated in our very typical yet-to-be-remodeled 1949 kitchen, where counter space is a precious commodity. We’d recommend it to anyone!

  1. Hi E! OMG everything about this post has my mouth watering: definitely that wedding cake ice cream, of course, but also that beautiful mixer stand and the freeze bowl. We have plenty of counter space here in Edinburgh (because we don't own anything here — oh wait, spoons, we have spoons!) — so feel free to bring it over this way, with you two attached of course 🙂

Sorry I can't keep in touch as well as I would likes! I will have real internets in about nine days (and counting) — things move a littttle slowly here. Harumphs!

  2. I hope this tasted good! Glad you could squeeze as much as possible out of that cake. 😀 And thanks for tips on getting my ice cream maker to work right (even though simply reading the directions would have worked too >.>)!
