China Feng

This weekend we headed out on a rainy Saturday afternoon to this week’s BHFE: China Feng. It has a surprisingly good selection of menu items. Largest selection of soups I’ve seen at a fast-food chinese place. The menu helpfully lists which dishes are made with MSG – and there were only a few. The interior is outdated and faded, but very clean and well-taken care of. I was surprised at the number of people who chose to eat in as we did. I took a picture of the interior, but unfortunately it was a really bad shot of Adam, so we’ll be kind and not post it. Just think pink, pink, more pink and fake orchids.

We got:
House Soup for 2 – ~$5.75
Hunan Beef Dinner Combo – $9.95
Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce Dinner Combo – 7.95

The soup was really good. It had big chunks of veggies (broccoli, carrots, cabbage, zucchini), shrimp, and chicken floating in a most amazing broth. It was a simple dish but very tasty and filling. It inspired me to get serious about stock-making. (I recently heard a shrimp stock recipe on Splendid Table that sounded phenomenal and made it for the first time tonight. If it’s good, I’ll be sure to share.)

The combination plates came with fried rice, a veggie spring roll, and a chicken wing. (Does anyone know where the fried-chicken-wing-included-in-chinese-takeout-combos tradition comes from? Seems weird to me.) Chicken wing was average to below-average, and the veggie roll was solid.

Once again I forgot my camera at home… shredded pork in the front, Hunan beef in the back.

The Hunan beef, the more expensive dish, was very average – somewhat boring really. Maybe this is because I only sampled it after chowing down on the shredded pork in garlic sauce, which I thought was amazing. I really did enjoy every bite. It was reminiscent of the same dish as found at Little Szechuan, though neither as good nor as expensive.

Collectively, husband and I both feel that this chinese takeout place is a solid three stars. Some dishes were better than expected, some worse. I wouldn’t spend my time sitting down in the restaurant again (When I could be at home in my jammies, watching Star Trek or playing Dungeon Defenders?! Please!), but I think if you are in delivery range, this is a decent choice in the cheap chinese takeout category.

Post Script:

The sign is over the cleaner’s… because it’s not a restaurant, but part of the Chevron station..

As some of you know, this week was supposed to be BB’s Wings – an adventure I was both looking forward to and dreading, as BB’s seemed to be a hole in the wall wing shop that is actually located in a Chevron, with horrible online reviews. Yet, the concept of a wings and fried rice combo meal was unique at least. However, BB’s was not to be…
