Bacon Week: Pork, The Meat of Kings

The n00b Kitchen

Today’s Bacon Week is also doubling as March’s n00b Kitchen post.  Woo woo for multitasking!  We’ll be talking a bit about bacon as an internet phenomenon.

I remember bacon as a general meme hitting the internet sometime when I was in college and taking off like a rocket.  It’s completely possible it was around before then, but I seem to recall it getting bigger and crazier while I was studying in school.  It definitely ended up making lots of appearances in my diet, and I spent plenty of hours laughing at bacon pictures, videos, and cooking ideas (but definitely not time I should have been studying).

Push Button - Receive Bacon

Push Button, Receive Bacon is one of the earlier memes I remember specifically having to do with bacon.  Like many memes the exact origin of this one is fuzzy, though a possible one is a  photographer named Rick Lee who in 2005 took the pictures seen on every air hand dryer in a public bathroom and slapped a caption on it, yielding instant internet views.  He actually has a blog post explaining exactly how the idea came about.  Here’s a quick quote:

We were washing our hands in a McDonald’s somewhere and I said to him “look at this… to me this looks like it says push button, receive bacon.” Well… we laughed and laughed all day about that.

Other possible origins include a band named “Push Button Receive Bacon” as well as a picture of a graffiti’d air hand dryer with the words scrawled onto it.  Regardless of where it came from, it’s a fantastic meme that’s been rehashed multiple times.

A classic.  Weebls Stuff constantly delivers fun flash videos, the above being one of them.  You can check out the full, non-stop version of the video here, but be aware: the flash version is on continuous loop.  I recommend the buddy system when watching in order to keep you from falling into a pork-and-flash-induced stupor, turning your brain into mush.  Seriously, it can be that hypnotic.

The Bacon Explosion.  Another bacon phenomenon that popped up and took off.

I think the flags are a nice touch. Subtle and classy.

I like bacon, but this is one pork-infused food that I have not tried…and for now I think I’m okay with that.  A bacon explosion is a woven sheet of thick-cut bacon that gets wrapped around more bacon and a log of pork sausage, then slathered in BBQ sauce and grilled.  According to Wikipedia this monster has 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat.  Not that I’m all about healthy food here at n00bcakes, but I think I want to get a bit older before keeling over of a heart attack.

Then there’s the vast array of bacon-related products that are all over the place.  These include, but are not limited to…

That’s all for today…have a super Friday everyone…and enjoy another classic bacon image from the Perry Bible Fellowship (typically NSFW – be cautioned!).

Formerly of both n00bcakes and !Blog, the two magically become one on Spatialdrift; expect some lazy baking and serious nerditude. Also, I love semicolons.
